After hearing of the destruction of photos by Andres Serrano in a Swedish gallery I had to see for myself what could possibly be considered that disturbing that groups feel they need to come in and demolish it.

Andres Serrano is an artist from New York and he studied at the Brooklyn Museum and Art School. From what I’ve found his works have ranged from simple portrait photos, to more controversial pieces, the latter obviously being the target of these hate crimes. One of Serrano’s more recognizable pieces is titled “Piss Christ.” It is an image of a crucifix in a container of urine. Hopefully that gives you some insight to why his pieces might be considered controversial.

An image of “Piss Christ” from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piss_Christ

Pieces that were attacked at the gallery were part of the exhibit “History of Sex.” These images weren’t pornography. They were graphic sex acts that included a woman masturbating a horse. Though these images seem very racy, that doesn’t mean someone can go out and destroy someone’s work. Freedom can be a very taboo thing in today’s society. We have all these freedoms supposedly, but once someone actually uses these freedoms outside the norm of which they are used people freak out. We put limits on what we say we are free to do. Serrano could have just as easily put a tennis ball in the urine or just put the crucifix in somewhat instead, but he didn’t. These simple objects hold more than just face value to people and that is where the controversy begins. By taking objects that people have passionate associations with he is upsetting people and that is why there are groups going in and destroying his works.

Serrano stepped outside of the bounds of society’s conventions and people are being offended. They’re saying that because you have gone against my beliefs you shouldn’t have that freedom anymore. People considered art to be beautiful when it is of something they personally believe is a representation of beauty, but because Serrano’s images are of things people consider ugly or offensive they feel that gives right to take his freedom of expression away from him.

This is a very tough subject to write about for me because I truly believe that art shouldn’t have constraints. If you don’t like a piece, no one is forcing you to look at it. If it is created out of pure expression either appreciate it or at least analyze, but don’t just write it off or try to destroy it. Serrano’s works are amazing to me because he is doing something everyone else is afraid to. He is exploring beyond what the masses consider to be art and finding new ways of expression. To me, that is what freedom is all about. Just because you are offended or shocked or appalled by his images gives you no right to try and take it away from him. Art is worthless if it is just the same as everything else.

On October 10 the progressive rock band Radiohead releases their new album “In Rainbows” only there is something special about this release. There are two versions of their latest album, a hard copy and a digital one. The hard copy will be a box set that includes the new album on CD, also on double vinyl, and bonus materials including an extra disc with bonus content. There is something very special about the digital release of this album. It will be the exact same songs and content found on the CD in the box set, but price to download it will be totally up to the individual consumer. You pay what you want to pay. The price to download the album is entered in by you. Is this a horrible marketing disaster or pure genius and knowledge of the times?

The band accepts the fact that we are in a digital world and that is creating a different kind of audience and how they get their music. People download millions of bytes of information everyday, legally and illegally. Radiohead recognizes the fact some people would rather download the new CD instead of going out to a store and purchasing it. There are no more long lines outside of record stores hours before the store opens to pickup the new album by your favorite artist. In this age time is very precious. If you could go along with your everyday schedule then come home and take five minutes to download it, what is the point of waiting in line.

By using this unique marketing strategy of “name your own price” they are targeting these people who don’t have the desire to go out and buy music. There are those who think that 18 dollars for a CD is too expensive, but are still willing to pay Radiohead some money, and then there are those who will simply see “make your own price” and be intrigued. It also attracts people who don’t really know much about Radiohead. They can spend any amount of money to hear what they’re all about. The band also keeps their more traditional fans in mind because long time followers of the band will want to purchase the full box set and are willing to pay the money.

Overall Radiohead realizes the convenience of the Internet to most people and that by marketing their new album as “pay your own price,” the intrigue alone will call a vastly larger audience to them, because of the price, or lack there of, and that this type of marketing will draw people in to the band themselves. People have never seen anything like this and for some, they’ll want to learn more about Radiohead and what made them make this move. It seems to me that this “make your own price” version is a way of finding a new audience because it sounds good to anyone, even if you really don’t know much about the band.

Recently there was an incident at a Boston airport where MIT student Star Simpson was almost, “blown away” by the state police. She was wearing a sweatshirt that had a computer motherboard powered by a battery attached to it. She was wearing this for career day while going to the airport. Then before she knew it state police with guns drawn ready to take her out because the motherboard allegedly looked like a bomb surrounded her. A state policeman was quoted using the phase “blown her away,” which is what would have happened to Simpson if she didn’t do exactly as she was told.

Picture found at http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2007/09/boston-airport-.html#more

What does this mean? How can something so harmless stir up so much trouble? Americans post 9/11 are in a constant state of fear, so much that people are willing to give up everything in order to feel a little safer. By everything I’m referring to freedoms, specifically the freedom to wear what ever you want without getting harassed. Do to this mind set of fear and the idea that everyone’s a terrorist makes people do crazy things. This simple career day shirt almost got this girl killed! Is someone going to call a bomb threat every time someone wears something that looks a little different? If you look at the sweatshirt you could argue that it does look a little suspicious, that isn’t the point, the point is that it was a shirt, and how many terrorist do you know wear their bombs in plain sight and disguise themselves as young adult MIT students.

This post 9/11 era is a lot more dangerous then Americans think, and it isn’t because of the terrorists. It is because of this helpless, fragile, mindset, that Americans were given through that attack. This mindset has made people easily manipulated things in our society have changed, freedoms taken away. The biggest example of this is the Patriot Act, but a smaller example of it is this poor girl. The government is passing things that would have never ever been allowed if people weren’t so afraid that “the terrorist will win.” It isn’t only the government but retailers too. If we don’t buy more stuff the “terrorist will win.” What does buying a car have to do with terrorism?

Fear will cause people to do strange things. Nothing scared Americans more than 9/11. This event shows that event shows that even now, years later, we are still in fear. Unless we realize that we can’t quite living because of terrorism who knows what will lose in the name of the war on terror.

Hearts, cartoons, beer, what do all these things in common, they can be seen on men’s boxer shorts and in Atlanta that’s a problem. People are tired of seeing boys with their pants way below there waists, so much sometimes that there entire ass is hanging out. Who actually has a problem with this and why are they going so far as to pass a law that would include fines and community service if caught with their pants down? It is the OLD PEOPLE.

Today’s Hip Hop and rap culture is reaching the teenage and young adults of our generation. They idolize this culture of rims, women, drugs, and money because that is what these “rappers” idolize. Naturally if rappers dress with their pants halfway down their ass, the listeners are going to want to dress in the same fashion. Now the older generation have a problem with this because they don’t understand it, they don’t enjoy the music, they don’t know the names, so there is no way they’d appreciate the style.

Now I’m not one to expose my boxers in public, in fact I think it is the most ridicules fashion statements today, but I’m would never even go so far as to say, “We need a law for this.” if people want to look stupid in public, that’s their own business. I’ve been reading several different media sources to find general opinions on the subjects and I think I’ve got a grasped on the feelings towards the issue. Old rich people think it is so disgraceful that we need a law to prevent it, and at the other end are the people with the sagging pants who of course love it. In newspapers written by people who don’t know anything about the rap culture of today are for the law. Small blogs on the web written by listeners preach out against freedom of expression and how they should be able to wear what they want to wear. The issue is imbedded in the generation gap, parents of today’s youth can’t understand why their children dress the way they do, but what parents don’t realize that this is probably the same argument their parents had with them over leather jackets, mini-skirts, or boys with long hair (depending on the age of the parent). This is just something that happens over time, in this case it just seems a little more raunchy because undergarments have always been a little bit more taboo.

The point is this is a very stupid issue and a waste of our tax dollars if police are intending on enforcing this and all the other services that eat up our money into putting this law together. Having long hair myself and being male, if you intend on living outside the social standards that have been set by previous generations you are going to face adversities, that’s just how it is. People aren’t mature enough to realize that fads change outside of what they consider normal, so just worry about yourself, Okay.

Facebook, MySpace, and many other sites that I don’t know about are the latest online fads. These are known as “social networking sites.” They allow the user to create their own personalized page, which they then use to contact other users, look at their pages, leave comments, look at pictures, join groups, and other things of that nature. They’re intended to be a way of keeping in touch with people, allowing users to communicate with old friends or people they might not be able to see on a regular basis.

Personally, I do not and will not have a page on one of these sites. I think it is one of the biggest wastes of time and in terms of representing yourself, nothing could be faker. I’ll never forget this girl that I met, we talked for about 10 minutes and she asked, “Do you want to be my friend on Facebook?” I replied, “Can’t we just be real friends?” That is pretty much my overall feeling towards the subject. I have no desire to be someone’s virtual friend, or have access to people’s online journal’s to read about how someone got so drunk last night that he threw up on their couch. People don’t put up real information about themselves anyway. They show you an image of how they want you to think about them. That is why so many teenage girls are putting up half naked pictures of themselves. They feel this presentation of themselves (as a sexual icon) will attract people to their page, but the fact that they get good grades or like to play the piano will not get them as many hits. Their goal is to be popular, the same thing as in real life. Members of these sites try to do whatever they can to attract people to their pages and make online friends. Your life is really more fulfilled knowing that someone halfway across the world saw your page and wrote, “Kool.”

Maybe I’m just old fashion, but I’d rather sit down and talk to someone. Then go read about their day and post comments like, “LOL!” I don’t need to spend 4 hours a day redesigning the layout of my page and deciding what are my favorite pages this week anyways. If I need to talk to a friend I haven’t seen for a while

Cell phones are everywhere. There are very few people today that have never used, seen, or own one, and one thing that they all come with are bills. Obviously this would be an issue that an ad for a cell phone service provider would focus on in order to attract more potential customers. That is exactly what my advertisement that I’ve chosen does, but in a way that stands out above the rest, a way that I find very clever. Cingular is trying to promote their new “Go Phones,” a pay as you go service, which means no monthly fees for the customer. Cingular does this using a situation that would seem very common for a family with children that have a cell phone.

(This video was gotten from youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GQBABkFI34)

“I can’t believe the price of this bill, how much time do you spend on that phone.” Seem familiar, a parent scolding their child for going over their minutes on the phone resulting in huge overage changes on the bill. What Cingular does is take this moment of anger, yelling, and fighting and completely reverses the words spoken but keeps the same intonations and intensity in the situation that people would use if they were arguing. So instead of the mother saying to the daughter “Do you know how much money this is costing me?” she says, “Do you know how much money that I’m saving?’ or something along those lines. As human beings, we tend to enjoy drama, that is fighting, action, yelling, that is why the news would rather show a ten-car pile-up as front page instead of story about the stock market. The anger entices us to watch and pay attention. It tricks the viewer into watching because they expect to see some action.

The ad is talking to a mother of a middle class family who is paying a fortune in phone bills every month, because ultimately the parents are the ones who are determining what service to buy. The ad shows a family that appears to be middle class, because if they were rich the family wouldn’t have to argue over bills, they’d have money. It gives you this “right at home” feeling because these arguments seem so generic that they could be over anything. Cingular wants to make sure you can see yourself in these commercials. In order to do this they have this family that is exactly what would pop into your head as a picture of an “average” American family. It tries to get people to examine their lives and see if this is an issue in their home. It is saying if you buy this product there won’t be any more fights and most importantly it is going to save money, which is always a good thing. It is giving the audience a familiar situation only with words you aren’t used to hearing in them and that causes you to listen, it makes you want to know what they’re fighting over.

This drew my attention very easily and I continued to listen because I thought, “That sounds so weird to hear the opposites of what people normally yell at each other.” This familiarity that comes from the tone of an argument, but replaced with different words is what is engaging, To hear it can be awkward for us because at first it doesn’t click in our heads, then when it does you realize they’re not arguing. It can be pretty funny to hear which is also drawing because you want to know what they’ll say next, what kind of twist they’ll put in the next sentence. It creates this association between Cingular and these weird conversations that is very memorable because it is so different, which is exactly that point. Cingular wants you to remember them so they make an ad that is very catchy because it is so different then Cingular sticks in your head it is the point of advertising.

The end result of this ad is of course to get you to buy this phone, but it tries to establish this image in your head of how if you purchase this product that everything will be all better. Your family will be so happy that they’re saving money that even when you fight you are going to be saying nice things to each other. One of the commercials of this campaign cleverly ends with the daughter saying to the mother, “I’ll always love you and I never won’t!” and the mother replying, “I raised you to talk that way!” as the daughter runs upstairs and slams the door. Classic.
